In A History of the World in 100 Objects, Neal MacGregor, director of the British Museum, takes readers on a tour of the world by way of its material goods. It is the history of man through 100 objects – all of which are from the collection at the British Museum. From the very first hand axe to the ubiquitous credit card, each item has a story to tell; together they relate the larger history of mankind-revealing who we are by looking at what we have made.
The book will open your mind about history and how to understand mankind’s steps through objects. It is broken down into short 100 chapters making it ideal to as a relaxing read before bedtime. Each chapter tells the story of a unique object or set of objects, ranging from a hand axe and chopping tools that are more than a million years old through the modern credit card and a solar-powered lamp and charger.
This is a wonderful book, full of lavish illustrations and crystal clear maps. Neil MacGregor has taken a very unique approach in this book and manages to present history in a truly interesting and enjoyable way. The amount of massive research and scholarly insights shared in this book are astounding in their comprehensiveness and breadth of coverage. I’ve recommended the book to them as a way to gain perspective on how to tell a collection’s story in more complete and compelling ways.
